Writing Resources
There's a lot of different approaches when it comes to writing.
Some people like to take the Steven King approach, where they just writer as much as they can and trust that through the practice they'll get better. In his book, "On Writing," King mentions that he doens't even feel like he's writing the stories, but that they just exist in the ether and that he's more uncoverring them than constructing them.
Screenwriting guru Robert McKee has the exact opposite idea. In his book, "Story: Substance, Structure, Style and Principles of Screenwriting" he goes over the various parts of a story and how they all function adn how they look in various films. After I read this book I wanted a refund on college. If you've ever watched the movie "Adaptation" with Nick Cage, this is the book that Danny Hoffman won't stop reading, and when Charlie hoffman says, "...your words made me question not only my choices as a writer, but as a human being." the guy he's talking to is Robert McKee.
"Story" by Robert McKee legit changed my outlook on life and helped me find Christ (I'm only half joking) but "On Writing" by Steven King had a weird anecdote about getting farted on by a babysitter. So do with that what you will.
I've got the links for both books because while I really liked "Story" I recognize that it's super rigorous, heavy emphasis on structure and design isn't for everyone, and a lot of my artistic friends don't like being told how to write. I didn't love "On Writing," but there's wisdom in what King has to say about perseverence, and he does talk more about teh nitty gritty "how do I make a living on this" than McKee does.
Honestly I'd recomend "Story" to get your writing god-mode, then once it's there read "On Writing" to figure out how to get a paycheck adn to see how hard it is to get an agent and how to not get scammed.
Micropresses
Getting short stories published is the main way to show agents (and people that hire writers) that your writing is worth anything. Here's a few that I know about, and I'll be updating this list as I find more.
Tulsa Indies
